In an effort to promote the appropriate use of technology while keeping the integrity of the classroom instruction intact, the NJH cell phone policy will allow students to use their phones during designated times throughout the day. Students are permitted to use their cell phones during break and lunch. Students are not allowed to use cell phones during passing periods. Students must refrain from communicating with students who are in class during the lunch period. Such behavior may result in disciplinary action.
Students may not use their phones during instructional time. This means cell phones must be turned off or placed on silent and not be visible when entering the classroom. Headphones may not be visible during instruction time and passing periods. Also, phones may not be used outside of the classroom during instruction time. This includes leaving for the restroom, locker, library, or any other location outside of the classroom.
Teachers may permit use of cell phones for academic activities related to curriculum and will notify students when this type of use is authorized.
Phones that are used, or are visible, will be confiscated by the classroom teacher/staff member and turned into the main office.
1st offense - Cell phone will be confiscated and returned at the end of the day.
2nd offense - Cell phone will be confiscated and returned to parent/guardian and 3-days lunch detention.
3rd offense - Cell phone will be confiscated and returned to parent/guardian and 1-day in-house detention.
4th offense - Cell phone will be confiscated and returned to parent/guardian and 1 or more days of in-house detention.
Additional offenses will result in 1 or more days of in-house detention. A parent/guardian conference will be requested.
